Statement on the disappearance of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai

Berlin, November 19, 2021: Athletes Germany is very concerned about the whereabouts and well-being of Chinese tennis player Peng Shuai. Independent and verifiable evidence is needed regarding her safety and well-being. Her allegation of sexual assault by a Chinese government official must be acknowledged and investigated independently. Peng Shuai must be granted the opportunity to speak freely and without coercion about what happened.  

We believe the IOC carries the responsibility to fulfil its human rights obligations and to advocate for Peng Shuai’s safety vis-a-vis the Chinese government. Especially in view of the upcoming Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in China, organized sport must prove that it can guarantee the safety of the athletes.
